TEC
America, Inc., is a leading supplier of retail information
systems and equipment, including electronic cash registers
(ECRs), point-of-sale (POS) systems, direct and thermal
transfer printers, and electronic scales. |
The company,
with its U.S./Canadian Operations Center based in Atlanta,
GA, is a sales subsidiary of TEC Corporation (TEC), a $2.3
billion manufacturer of sophisticated retail and package delivery
systems and other electronic systems and components.
TEC was founded in 1950 in Tokyo, Japan, and is a member of
the Toshiba Group. It has some 8,800 employees worldwide.
TEC America was established as a subsidiary in 1969, four
years after opening a branch in Los Angeles.
The U.S./Canadian
operations as of November 1993 is housed in an 80,000 square-foot
complex of corporate offices to better support dealers and
customers under a single location concept. TEC offers service,
parts and warehousing for product inventory.
Today,
TEC America has more than 125 employees in the U.S. and Canada.
The company sells and services its products through more than
500 independent dealers. It also sells directly to major accounts
and original equipment manufacturers (OEM). Today, there are
more than 1.75 million TEC products in operation throughout
the U.S. and Canada.
From the beginning, TEC concentrated on establishing and maintaining
excellent customer relations.
It works with engineers and application specialists to modify
TEC designs as needed and follows through with strong support
services.
The company offers knowledgeable service through its dealer
network, its national service organization, its corporate
support staff and help desk. Product and system documentation
is designed to be clear and effective.
TEC's bar code systems have taken the company beyond its traditional
retailing market. They are now becoming fixtures in factory
automation applications and physical distribution systems
used in inventory control and shipment tracking.
Moving from its heritage as a primary supplier of mechanical
registers, TEC has developed a series of electronic cash registers
and load cell precision scales. In particular, TEC set the
industry pace in the development and market introduction of
ECRs based on microprocessors, giving the company a solid
position in the manufacture of POS systems.
TEC has developed a diverse lineup of ECRs to meet the specific
demands of restaurants and stores, capable of gathering and
storing data for reporting.
TEC scales have won acceptance because of their accuracy.
Designed to support retail operations at the sales counter
and in the back room, TEC scales range from standard electronic
scales to multifunctional units featuring a built-in bar code
label printer.
TEC also has a full line of direct and thermal transfer label
and tag printers used in retail, commercial and industrial
applications. These printers offer great speed, reliability
and accuracy. In addition to traditional bar code printers,
TEC has a four-color process thermal transfer printer that
produces more than 260,000 colors at six inches per second.
The systems are often deployed with scanners, PCs, hand held
terminals, and other peripheral hardware and software.
TEC's POS systems are where all the pieces come together --
its printer, scale and cash register technology, its retail
information systems know-how, its software capability and
its hardware development expertise. TEC offers POS systems
specifically for grocery stores, fast food outlets, convenience
stores, pizza and fine dine restaurants, and general merchandise
and specialized retailers.
